KBL Round 35 (Regular Season): Wonju DB beats KoGas by one after a very close game

The games at this stage are more interesting as they can be crucial for the final standings in Regular Season. Despite we already know who is stronger and who is weaker, there may be still last minute surprises and upsets. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

Seventh-ranked KoGas (18-27) were very close to win a game against first ranked Wonju DB (35-10) on Saturday. Wonju DB managed to secure only one-point victory 75-74. However their fans expected much easier game. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of KoGas. American power forward Dedric Lawson (206-1997, college: Kansas) saved the victory by scoring 22 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Guard In-Woong Park (186-2000) contributed with 17 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Filipino guard Samjosef Belangel (177-1999) answered with 29 points and 6 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) for KoGas. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Wonju DB have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain first place with 35-10 record. KoGas at the other side keep the seventh position with 27 games lost. Wonju DB will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. KoGas will play on the road against Seoul Thunders (#10) and are hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
Very important is a road loss of second ranked Sonicboom (29-14) against sixth ranked Egis (22-20) on Saturday night. Visiting Sonicboom was defeated by Egis in a tough game in Jeonju 94-101. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of Sonicboom. It was a great evening for the former international Joon-Young Choi (200-1994) who led his team to a victory scoring 26 points and 5 assists. Guna Ra helped adding 16 points and 14 rebounds. American power forward Paris Bass (207-1995, college: Detroit) responded with a double-double by scoring 32 points, 16 rebounds and 4 assists. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. KCC Egis maintains sixth place with 22-20 record. Suwon KT at the other side keeps the second position with 14 games lost. KCC Egis will play against Sono SG (#8) in Daegu in the next round. Suwon KT will play at home against LG Sakers (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
An interesting game was also surprising home defeat of 5th ranked Mobis Phoebus in a game in Ulsan versus Sono SG (#8) 83-73. It was an exceptional evening for Jeong-Hyeon Lee who led the winners and scored 29 points and 5 assists. Gaige Prim came up with a double-double by scoring 34 points (!!!) and 16 rebounds for Mobis Phoebus in the defeat. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Sono SG maintains eighth place with 14-30 record. Loser Mobis Phoebus keep the fifth position with 21 games lost. Sono SG will meet at home higher ranked KCC Egis (#6) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Mobis Phoebus will play against Seoul Knights and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 35: Anyang was smashed by LG Sakers on the road 97-64. Seoul Knights lost to KoGas on its own court 66-79. Mobis Phoebus unfortunately lost to Seoul Thunders in a road game 77-92.



LG Sakers - Anyang 97-64

No shocking result in a game when third ranked Sakers (28-16) crushed 9th ranked Anyang (13-31) in Changwon 97-64 on Friday. LG Sakers outrebounded Anyang 40-23 including a 28-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. LG Sakers shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 52.2 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists comparing to just 12 passes made by Anyang's players. It was an exceptional evening for naturalized American guard Justin Gutang (191-1997, college: Skyline JC) who led the winners and scored 15 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field). Egyptian center Assem Marei (206-1992, college: MSU) accounted for 12 points and 5 rebounds for the winning side. American forward Jamil Wilson (201-1990, college: Marquette) came up with 19 points and 4 assists and the former international point guard Jihoon Park (184-1995) added 18 points and 4 assists respectively for Anyang in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. LG Sakers maintains third place with 28-16 record having eight points less than leader Wonju DB. Anyang lost tenth consecutive game. Defending champion keeps the ninth position with 31 games lost. LG Sakers will meet league's second-placed Suwon KT in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Anyang will play against Sono SG (#8) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There was a minor upset when 4th placed Knights (26-18) lost to seventh ranked KoGas (18-27) in Seoul 66-79 on Friday. KoGas outrebounded Seoul Knights 42-27 including a 32-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was an exceptional evening for Canadian Andrew Nicholson (206-1989, college: St.Bonaventure) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 31 points and 12 rebounds. Forward Bawee Cha (191-1989) accounted for 10 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side. American center Jameel Warney (203-1994, college: Stony Brook) came up with 20 points and 7 rebounds and the former international guard Jaehyun Oh (185-1999) added 17 points respectively for Seoul Knights in the defeat.
